As for now, Marijuana, Hash and edibles that are rich in THC Were mostly used for recreational purposes in parties, And Cannabis with high THC is illegal (Until the legalisation mouvements).
For Years cannabis used to be classified as a Drug that lacks Medical benefits until the the spot light of it’s medical uses got back to the mainstream.
According to Livescience.com :
“THC, or tetrahydrocannabinol, is the chemical responsible for most of marijuana’s psychological effects. It acts much like the cannabinoid chemicals made naturally by the body, according to the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA).
Cannabinoid receptors are concentrated in certain areas of the brain associated with thinking, memory, pleasure, coordination and time perception. THC attaches to these receptors and activates them and affects a person’s memory, pleasure, movements, thinking, concentration, coordination, and sensory and time perception, according to NIDA.”
And with the Covid Spreading, Along with the awareness on how cannabis (Both medical and recreational) is harmless and how it actually has some health benefits, it came to the interest of researchers how would cannabis react against Covid.
First, a study in canada shows that CBD may be helpful in preventing the Covid-19 from entering and finding a spot to breed in the body.
The research was conducted on artificially 3d-Printed lungs but it was effective
“Their study led them to hypothesize that those extracts high in CBD could be leveraged to combat Covid-19 infections by modulating levels of ACE2 (angiotensin-converting enzyme II) in certain “gateway” tissues.
These include lung tissue, oral/nasal mucosa, gastrointestinal tract, kidney, and testes. The researchers believe that modulating ACE2 levels in these areas with CBD could help to decrease people’s susceptibility to Covid-19. As the coronavirus can only enter a human host with a receptor, i.e. ACE2, targeting these could reduce the risk of infection significantly.”
That means the medical cannabis (Rich in CBD) can be used as a ‘preventer’ for the corona virus, Which could help reducing infectivity rate, But that’s not everything.
Lately, Researches from South Carolina University found that THC can cure Covid-19 !
“Researchers at the University of South Carolina think they have found a way to treat COVID-19, and it involves THC — the ingredient that gets people high when smoking marijuana.”
Researches conducted on mice have shown some mind-blowing results since the death rate among rats is 100% when infected with covid in less than 5 days, but the cure rate when treated with THC is actually high which could give us hope in finding a cure based on THC.
“Mice die within five days — 100% of the mice die — but if you treat those mice with THC that is found in the marijuana plant, then we can pretty much cure all of those mice,” Nagarkatti said. “So, how do we get from mice to people? It’s important to remember that THC is already available for physicians to treat cancer patients … so we know the dose from people who are taking it already so we can try those doses that are being tested in other diseases to see whether that can be tolerated by the COVID-19 patients.”
We are no longer talking about just preventing the covid-19, we are talking about curing it,
This is still a research topic but the primary results are promissing, and we expect that we can actually find a cure based on cannabis in the near future.
